We Know We know Him… 1 John 1&2

If we say we know Him…

1 John 2:3-6 (NKJV) 3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

John had a pretty simple and direct approach to these deep truths.

This is THE message. The message/truth that guides all others…

1 John 1:5 (NKJV) This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.

Light! God is light.

John was dealing with the same problem we deal with today. Those who fool themselves and say one thing but have no light within them. The intention was not to make a judgement call who were and who were not but instead to make it very simple to know if one was or was not.

We just need to read the Bible and read it frequently and being the reflection of the Word will reveal and makes things clear.

If we say “I know Him” then that meant certain things …

• We keep His commandments.
• We keep His word.
• We walk just as He walked… in the Light.

Not just some of it but all of it. This is not legalistic but is the point. Not a Word was penned that was not intended to be followed. This is nothing new. This is just the way it is. This should keep us real humble and real repentant.

Just because we say something means nothing if these things are not true in our life. He continues:

1 John 2:6 (NKJV) He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

1 John 2:9-11 (NKJV) 9 He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. 10 He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. 11 But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

The same is true as it pertains to the light and darkness in our life.

• Live in love and be in light.
• Live in hate and remain in darkness.

Say you are in light but live in hate and there is only darkness. These things are made simple.

Strange how truth so simple and clear and be so muddied and complicated.

Let us live in the Spirit today by living in the Word.
