Ephesians 3:20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
I woke up this morning with this verse in my heart. As I sat down to do devotions, I felt the prompting of the Holy Spirit to write about the coming year with this verse in mind. I love to take focused time each year to pray and prepare for the coming year. It is never too late or too early to start praying and preparing our hearts for the coming year.
Preparing for 2026 doesn’t mean we take out our to-do lists, our new year resolution pens or our calendars and budgets. When I say prepare, I am mostly referring to our faith. You can plan all day long, but without faith, it will be hard to accomplish any of it when the unforeseen comes or the year doesn’t start or turn out like you planned.
Ephesians 3:20 says, He is able to do exceeding, abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us. This verse tells me that even if I can dream it up, think it up, hope and pray for something, God is going to do above and beyond that. Remember, God’s ways are higher than our ways, his thoughts are higher than our thoughts.
Isaiah 55:8-9 8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
His timing is perfect. His method is flawless. His provision is endless and always provides for his will. That is providence. His motive is always love. His end goal is always his glory and our good.
The greatest work in preparation for the coming year is in the surrender of our plans, not the making of our plans.
Roll your Plans onto the Lord.
Proverbs 16:3 Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.
This verse is a crucial first step in preparing for 2026. Many of us have some sort of plan for next year. We have goals and dreams. We have hopes. That all comes from the Lord. But the Lord requires us take those dreams, visions, hopes, and plans and roll them back onto him. The word “commit” in Hebrew is galal. It means to roll it onto God, and trust him with your work. It is a picture of a boulder being placed at the top of a hill, and you release that boulder and let it roll down the hill. Once you roll that boulder down the hill, you have released control and now have to trust that whatever happens is in the hands of the Lord.
Whatever you can dream up, God dreams bigger. Whatever you can hope for, God can do greater. God’s work is not always seen at first. Remember, he is working when we can’t even see it. He is accomplishing eternal work, for he is an eternal God with an eternal mindset. Every year we live, God is working through us for his eternal plan. Let us see the weight and gravity of every year as it comes upon us. Let is believe for greater things! Let us hope and dream and commit those hopes and dreams to the Lord and let Him establish them in his way, his timing, his purpose and with his provision.
